Millennium Fellowship
This semester I have had the pleasure of being a Millennium Fellow and be a part of a project aimed at making a difference on campus. I am honored to be selected as a Millennium Fellow this year, joining over 3,000 leading peers from 200+ campuses worldwide - all committed to having bold social impact!
As part of the Millennium Fellowship, I am a part of the Panthers Reducing Waste project here at Florida International University. This group project was founded by students who are passionate about the environment and making a change on campus. We have different components of the project that are working on reducing textile (clothing) waste, food waste, energy waste, and plastic waste.
As a group, we have been working to create a Sustainability Hub on FIUs MMC campus. We will be using the Hub to host events and workshops with clubs and other organizations that are working for the same things as we are. The Hub is located in the Visitors Information Center at FIUs MMC campus, and we will officially be open starting November 7th! We will start collecting donations this day as well, and hope to have workshops and events set up soon! More information about the Fellows and our project can be seen in this video!
I created the survey that we used to find out if students will use the Hub and when they would be available. I also asked them what they would like to see different on campus and if there was anything specific they wanted to tell us that we could eventually bring to the administration. With over 100 responses, the survey was successful in letting us know that students are concerned about waste on campus, meaning plastic, food, energy, everything we are working to change. It also helped us create our hours so that it would be accessible for whoever wanted to come and visit. I also run the Instagram account @panthersustainabilityhub where we post all of our updates including what events we are hosting, when we are tabling, and what
our hours will be for the week.
I am a member of the plastic waste group, and I have been working to reduce the use of plastics on campus while also encouraging students to reuse and recycle different items. I am interested in expanding this project and having others who come after me continue the work I have done. The goal would be to see FIU become a plastic-free campus and serve as a role model to other campuses around the country. I have since shifted my part of the project to focus on up-cycling and sustainable art. This new focus made sense for me since I will be graduating, and it will allow whoever wants to take over the plastic portion after I am gone to have a set focus instead of being in the dark. Also, this allows students to be more hands-on in my portion of the project. I wanted it to be more inclusive, and although I had to change my original ideas, I think this was the best thing I could do in terms of my part of the project.
